Oct 5 - St Georges Church - Kelmscott

Next morning, we enjoy a complimentary breakfast at the Plough Inn and then take walk around the village. We find a most unexpected gem of a village church, St. Georges of Kelmscott.

The church dates back to a 12th century Chapel of Ease in which medieval wall paintings have been restored and maintained. The transepts were added in the late 13th century and the church has been preserved as it was from the 15th century onward by diligent local archivists that included William Morris.

The main window behind the altar contains the oldest stained glass in the UK - 1430

The Sanctus bellcote has one of the oldest bells in England, early 13th century

The church yard is also the site of William Morris and his family's graves

On our way back to Batheaston, we stop for coffee at a new roastery coffee bar just outside of Cirencester.

Back to K&A's house and tea on the front porch, then a luscious dinner of homemade Spanikopita, harissa roasted carrots and tomato cucumber salad
