Sept 26 - Ely, Kings Lynn, Holt

We prepare to leave our Air B&B flat in Cambridge with a delicious breakfast at Stir - Yoghurt/Compote/Granola bowl, Sourdough toast with poached eggs and Flat Whites.

We will end up in Holt by 4pm, but we will make stops in Ely for a magnificent Cathedral for a tour of their stained glass gallery.

By lunch time we drop into the Bake Shop and General Store for Flat Whites and croissants.

Our next stop is Kings Lynn....a medieval trading port, mentioned in the Domesday Book ( 1085 ) and grew to prominence when the cathedral was built in 1100. In 1204, King John gave the Bishops of Norwich a town Charter hat lasted until 1537, when the Reformation broke the authority of the Catholic Church and transferred it to the King - thus being name Kings Lynn ( Lynn is a Gaelic word for Tidal Pool). Then in 1474, Edward lV, in collaboration with Germany, and through the Treaty of Utrecht, turned the port into a significant trading port for the next 300 years.

  1. Again, just beautiful history in these long standing buildings and cathedrals.. but the stained glass.. the colours and I can just imagine the intensity when the light shines through.. from King John to giving the Bishops of Norwich a town Charter.....to Edward IV turning the port into a significant trading post .. ( First signs of Elbows UP maybe ?! ). You earned the Marguerita Pizza ! and entire meal !!

  2. Yes, the stained glass was amazing. And even more amazing was the fact that modern techniques still follow the Roman method! We have just sped up the kiln firing time thru technology (from 4 days down to 40 minutes!) ha, yes, I have been getting some stares are my Elbows up hat! I Am Canadian!
